93-yard drive helps lift Pottsville to win over Reading in 87th meeting

A 93-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass from Nick Schafer to Jared Cicero gave the Crimson Tide a 14-7 victory over Reading on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

During the drive, Pottsville (1-1) converted a fourth-and-inches from its own 17-yard line when Schafer picked up five yards on a quarterback sneak.

Cicero also picked up a key third-and-long on the drive with a 16-yard gain, and scored the game-winner on fourth-and-5 from the Reading 7.

Pottsville got on the board first when Schafer found receiver Frankie Mercuri for a 35-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

The defense stood tall throughout, until Reading (0-2) fullback Francis Camara scored on a 79-yard jaunt in the third quarter to even the score.

Pottsville sophomore halfback Jeremy Hoke broke the 100-yard mark for the second straight game, picking up 130 yards on 23 carries.

Schafer finished 5-for-12 with 76 yards and the two scores.

The Crimson Tide will open Inter-County League play this Friday when they travel to the Eagles Nest to face unbeaten Blue Mountain in the annual backyard rivalry. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
