The head coach at his alma mater, Keating just completed his 19th season at the helm of the Crimson Tide, posting a career record of 137-83-7, a .604 winning percentage. He trails only his mentor, the legendary Bill Flynn, in these categories at the school.
Keating has helped lead the Crimson Tide to four straight postseason appearances, capturing three straight District 11 Class AAA championships from 2004-2006 and earning consecutive trips to the PIAA Class AAA state championship game in 2005 and 2006. From 2004-2006, Pottsville posted a 36-7 record in one of the most successful runs in the school's 115-year football history.
During that three-year run, the Crimson Tide captured the first district championship in the program's history and earned two straight Inter-County League Section 1 championships in their first two seasons in the league. The Tide also compiled a a 16-game home winning streak over that time.
The 2005 squad fell to Franklin Regional, 23-13, in the state championship game, while the 2006 squad dropped a 28-23 decision to General McLane. The 2005 team was the first TEAM in the history of Pottsville Area High School to play for a state championship.
He has coached 12 teams to postseason appearances and led his 1994 squad to a 42-29 victory over Oviedo High School in Orlando, Fla. at the 22nd annual Rotary Bowl, becoming the first out-of-state team to defeat a Florida high school team in the history of the Thanksgiving Day game. Two of his teams have won Eastern Conference Class AAAA Championships; two of his teams were District 11 AAAA runner-ups, losing to Easton in 1991 and 1993. Pottsville earned its fifth trip to the Eastern Conference playoffs under Keating this past season, falling to Wilkes-Barre Coughlin in the Class AAA semifinal.
In all, Keating has 30 years of coaching experience, including three years coaching wide receivers at Division I-AA Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. from 2000-2003 under head coach Frank Tavani.
Twenty-four of his players have earned scholarships to Division I-A or I-AA college programs, while six have earned Big 33 honors and another was named to the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association East-West All-Star Football Classic. Six have received AP 1st Team All-State Honors, and one has received High School All-American Honors.
He has been named Coach of the Year by the Schuylkill County Coaches Association nine times and Coach of the Year in the Lower Anthracite Region in 1996, 2004 and 2006. He was selected to coach in the PSFCA East-West game in Altoona in 2005. In 2006, he was named the PSFCA District 11 Coach of the Year and the Nike Eastern Pa. Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He served as the defensive coordinator under coach Mark Schmidt in the Big 33 Football Classic in Hershey in 2006, a 61-28 victory by the Pennsylvania all stars over Ohio.
This past June, Keating was inducted into the Pottsville Area High School Hall of Fame, joining his father, Russell B. Keating Sr., as a member.
During his playing career at Pottsville (Class of 1973), Kevin Keating won two letters under coach Bill Flynn as a running back, quarterback and defensive back. A two-year starter at corner and quarterback, Keating was a member of the 1971 undefeated Southern Division championship team and was a team captain during his senior year. He also ran track for the Crimson Tide, earning three letters while competing for coach Pete Sterner in hurdles and sprints.
After earning a letter as the starting wingback at Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Va., Keating matriculated to Gettysburg College (Class of 1978), where he played for two season before an ACL-tear cut his playing career short.
Keating currently teaches English at Pottsville and also coaches track for the Crimson Tide. He is married to the former Teresa Torpey and has three children: Kevin (26), Alicia (22) and Patrick (10).
